Tate Modern Chimney Refurbishment...
Preserving Tate Modern's iconic structure while ensuring art exhibitions and public safety remained undisturbed.
About
the Project...
Know Risk collaborated with TATE to undertake a high-profile refurbishment of Tate Modern's iconic 99m (325ft) chimney, focusing on remedial repairs, longevity, and establishing a future inspection regimen.
In the heart of one of the art world's most recognised locations, Know Risk was chosen for a crucial task: overseeing the meticulous refurbishment of the Tate Modern's towering chimney. The aim extended beyond mere repairs. We focused on predicting and planning for the future, determining the ideal inspection schedules to ensure the chimney's prolonged life.
At a Glance...
- Comprehensive CDM Coordination
- Detailed chimney elevation inspections
- Utilization of modular scaffoldings
- Incorporation of mechanically operated cradles for 360-degree access
- Comprehensive digital defect documentation
What
we did...
The approach to the task was multifaceted. It began with the installation of steeplejack ladders that led from the Turbine Hall roof to the top of the chimney, ensuring a secure pathway for our team. From there, a suspended modular scaffold was erected around the chimney's top, granting safe, unhindered access.
To further enhance the inspection process, a mechanically operated cradle was put into place. This device, once rigorously tested, facilitated the movement up and down the structure, allowing for a comprehensive examination of every nook and cranny.
The process was meticulous. Each of the chimney's four elevations was inspected thoroughly. The capping section, often the most vulnerable part of such structures, was given particular attention.
Digital photographs were taken at every stage, ensuring that even the minutest defect was documented. This imagery was then compiled into a comprehensive report, offering a clear, concise overview of the chimney's state and the work undertaken.
Project
Challenges...
The project wasn't without its challenges. Given its location, ensuring the safety and uninterrupted experience of the Tate's visitors and exhibitions was paramount. The sheer height of the structure introduced logistical complexities, especially when it came to erecting working platforms. Add to that the necessity of moving materials and personnel vertically, and the challenges grew. Lastly, the task of coordinating refurbishment work amidst ongoing public events and exhibitions beneath the chimney was no small feat.
How we overcame these challenges:
- Appointed a contractor proficient in handling such specific challenges, backed by thorough risk assessments and method statements.
- Maintained regular and detailed coordination with the TATE project management and events teams, ensuring areas below remained hazard-free.
- Conducted regular safety compliance checks, upholding the highest standards of workplace safety.
- Adhered strictly to statutory inspections of working platforms and hoists, with detailed records kept for every stage.
